Widget Wins Hinge on Social Networks | There are some useful stats but the conclusion is fairly obvious – “So for the widget market to succeed, social networks must continue to claim Internet users’ time. The more people can get done there, the less they are likely to go elsewhere.”

From my perspective, widgets provide a great opportunity for niche sites to piggy back off the major networks and not compete for a users internet time.

What Can Widgets Do? | ”Some people believe that social networks are becoming ‘walled gardens,’” says Ms. Williamson. “So many advertisers are experimenting with widgets as a way to penetrate them.”

That’s exactly it IMHO. The value of widgets has now evolved beyond being a means of tarting up your blog, for example, and is part of a wider trend to make information portable between websites. They might not necessarily increase traffic TO your site on a daily basis but they might increase usage OF your site. The trick is to make that work for you on a monetary basis.
